AN ARGUMENT FOR ORNAMENT
This project explores the role of Ornamentation in the twenty-first century Middle East. Looking to the origins of Ornament in Petra as a figurative idea through to a focus on the geometric ornament of Muqarnas, the project explores how a component based system could respond to the current discourse on Ornament. Looking to nature and drawing from the organised complexity viewed in the natural world around us, the architecture manifests as a system that gains complexity through the tessellation of separate geometries.

The system explained as a series of geometries that are organised in relation to a pedestrian by their level of ornamentation.
Looking to the biophilic idea of Organised Complexity, it is clear to understand the relationship between the ordered complexity in nature and the organisation of the components in Muqarna construction. The reason we find these highly ornamental interiors so appealing can be related back to our innate desire to be surrounded by nature.
