Hello,
My name is Luke Marriot, I am from Belfast, Northern Ireland, I have just completed my MArch Architecture Master’s course at the Bartlett School of Architecture, London, having completed my undergraduate BSc Architecture degree at the Bartlett in the summer of 2020. I am passionate about animation, architecture and digital space considering the use of digital tools to stimulate built outcomes. I like to operate between the currently-achievable and the near-future speculating where pervasive digital and manufacturing technologies can transform our understanding of space in a digital era.
Over the past two years, as part of my Master’s Research, in fourth year I engaged in themes of digital craft, cloud working and contemporary translations of Guild systems within a London context. In my fifth year, I conducted a critical research project that investigated spatial forms of text that have been overlooked in digital remediation. The project examined the potential of text to architectural mimesis. Designed where the architect creates the first edition of a book, rather than a drawing pack, imagining a situation in the text-driven AI world where a door is a page, a building is a book and a city is a library.
I enjoy using digital tools as design catalysts to trigger architectural responses with a strong awareness of their associated contexts. This year I have also been invited as a guest critic to the undergraduate first-year students at the Bartlett.
Through the 2022-23 academic year I have supported the BSc Architecture First Year programme as a Post Graduate Teaching Assistant. Offering tutorials, feedback, workshops, skills training for the students and performing administrative duties.
Throughout the summer of 2022, I worked at the internationally renowned practice, Mark Foster Gage Architects in Manhattan , NYC.
Prior to embarking on my Master’s in Architecture I spent a year working at Winch Design, an Architecture, Superyacht and Private Jet design studio.
In my third year, I explored parts-based systems as a twenty-first century translation of Middle-Eastern Ornament. Travelling to Amman, Jordan proved an intriguing context in which to situate my work. Fascinated by ideas of ornamentation from figuration through to the geometric I wanted to create work that challenged current discourses surrounding ornament.
Throughout my second year, I used literature to trigger architectural projects centred on narrative-led design. Looking to fictional stories and translating literary ideas into architectural artefacts in Rome, Italy.
In the summer of 2019 I had the pleasure of working as an Architectural Intern on a number of international projects ranging in scale for Perkins and Will’s London office.
In the summer of 2018 I volunteered as a tutor for a Built Environment Centre in Northern Ireland, PLACE NI. I mentored school-age young people from across Northern Ireland giving them an introduction to Architecture as a discipline.
During the summer of 2018, I travelled to Pietrasanta, Italy to participate in a summer school, ‘The City and the Water’ with the University of Pisa. I explored the municipality surrounding the Massaciuccoli Lake and how the water has supported a local fishing community, alongside providing inspiration for Giacomo Puccini, world famous composer, from his lake-side villa.
I enjoy positioning my projects at the precipice of current architectural and design discourse, strongly reinforced from a unique and personal theoretical stand-point. I am interested in a notion of space that responds to current theory, society and technology, taking on a sense of whimsy to create an intoxicatingly rich fictitious environment that centres on the joy of play.
Outside of Architecture I enjoy cycling and fixing bikes. Throughout my final year of undergraduate at the Bartlett I maintained part-time employment in a local bicycle shop.
Additionally, I am a trained classical singer, having sang as part of Northern Ireland Opera, The BBC Proms Youth Choir, The Ulster Youth Choir and the London Philharmonic Choir.
